| FUTURLINER NO. 10 |
 |
 |
| The first time the Futurliner
has been seen in Canada in 47 years |
Twelve Futurliners along with
32 support vehicles, toured the country from coast to
coast in the 1940 and '50s. Each Futurliner in this Parade
of Progress displayed modern advances in science and
technology such as jet engines, stereophonic sound, microwave
ovens, television and many other modern marvels of the
time. These Futurliners were custom-built by General
Motors around 1940, however WWII halted the Parade. In
1952, General Motors refurbished the Futurliners and
the Parade resumed - only to be forever discontinued
after 1956, a victim to one of its featured displays:
television.
This is Futurliner No. 10 - laboriously restored to its
original condition by more than 30 volunteers working
over a seven year period under the direction of Don Mayton
of Beaverdam, Michigan. Only eight other Futurliners
are known to exist, five of which are in total disrepair.
Futurliner No. 10 is owned by the National Automotive
and Truck Museum of the United States located in Auburn,
Indiana.
The restoration is an outstanding success because of
the many businesses, various clubs and private donors
who have generously contributed products, services and
funds.
